Teco Pottery was founded as the American Terra Cotta Tile and Ceramic Company in 1881, near Chicago, in Terra Cotta, Illinois, by William Day Gates. The name teco comes from the “te” in terra and “co” in cotta. By 1911, they produced over 500 designs in all kinds of shapes, colors and glazes.

Teco Pottery itself, started in 1899, with a line of art pottery in a matte green glaze, which accounts for over 90% of the pottery made.
In 1918, Teco bought the Indianapolis Terra Cotta Company and opened a branch a year later in Minneapolis. Production continued until 1922 until the branch closed down in 1929 due to problems brought on by the Great Depression. A. Berry, Jr., Gates attorney, bought the company in 1930 and resumed production of Terra cotta until 1941. After World War II, they continued to make clay products until 1966. In 1972, Teco closed down for good after a merger.

Hi, I had a vase, it was that green. I got an ID for catalina pottery step vase, but the mark isn’t right. this whas a 3 with a circle in the mold. no stamp, someone told me it was TECO maybe. catalina pottery didn’t agree evwn though the piece was exact, to a T. they said other people made it, I can send pic? thanks
