Dedham Pottery was founded in 1896, in Dedham, Massachusetts, by the Robertson family.

Alexander W. Robertson started a pottery in Chelsea, Massachusetts, in 1866. In 1868, his brother Hugh Cornwall Robertson joined the pottery and they were known as A.W. & H.C. Robertson. They changed the name again to Chelsea Keramic Art Works in 1872, after their father, James Robertson, joined the company. In 1889, they closed down but Hugh Robertson reorganized the company as the Chelsea Pottery U.S. in 1891. In 1896, they moved their business to Dedham, Massachusetts, under the name Dedham Pottery. It was operated by Hugh’s son and grandson until the business closed down in 1943.

They made crackled dishware with blue outlines of animals, flowers and other nature designs, with the rabbit design being the most popular.

I would also like to mention that there are some patterns missing from this guide. Owl, polar bear, moth or “ butterfly” that looks like a moth. Day lily ( extremely rare)

I suspect the dealer did not know what he was talking about and this was an area that was not his specialty. I am yet to see off shore reproductions of Dedhmmpottery but there I always a first!
Makes me sad to think that this is the next frontier for them if it is indeed the case. Ifbitvisvthe Potting Shed product I think it is easily recognizable by their design, but I would contact the Dedham Historical Society and sky for Jim Kauffman who is an expert in the field and send him pictures .

Then you will know the truth.

I found a piece of Dedham pottery with the elephant desighn , I took it down to a antique dealer . and even though it has a mark on the back he says its a reproduction. he said it has been reproduced in china. if that is the case what is the difference between the real ones and the fakes any information appreciated . mike
