Steuben

Steuben Glass Works was founded in 1903, in Steuben County, New York, by Thomas G. Hawkes, Sr. and Frederick Carder.

In 1918, they were purchased by the Corning Glass Company. Carder stayed with the company and designed many of the early pieces. Arthur Houghton was the President of the company from 1933 until 2008. Sidney Waugh replaced Carder as chief designer in 1933, who introduced clear crystal to the Steuben line. During the 1950’s, crystal hand coolers, usually in rounded animal shapes, became very popular.

In 2008, Schottenstein Stores Inc. bought 80% of the business. The Steuben Glass factory closed in November, 2011.

I have three remaining, small, hand-blown wine glasses (or could be sherbet bowls). They are iridescent green with pink ball connecting to stem. Unmarked, yet reminiscent of Steuben ware. I would love to know their history. No, they are not for sale.
